The London to Bath and Back record.

In 1981 John Woodburn set the Road Records Association Record for London to Bath and back. He covered the 211 miles in just 9 hours, 3 minutes and 7 seconds. A time so formidable that it has stood for over 28 years unchallenged. This my training blog as I attempt the break the record.

Forgive me blog readers for it has been a few days since my last post.
I've been visiting Devizes in Wiltshire. I took the bike down, having borrowed a Saris Bones car rack from Patrick. I have to say it is a brilliant piece of kit. I'd never attached it to my car before, yet even though it was dark, I had the bike secured in half the time of my old Halfords job.
Training was difficult on the Saturday night, as the roads were largely unlit. I tried to find some sort of safe curcuit, but after an hour went home. I'd managed a few hill repeats.

On the Sunday I rode to Bath to see some friends and then back again. This took in some of the route I'd be using on my attempt. I kept the effort within my percieved bounds for the attempt, but I was deflated to discover my average speed was just 20mph, 3-4 less than necessary for success. Okay so I was on my winter training bike, but it still points to a mountain to climb.
The road surface was appalling in places too, probably due to the recent frosts, but I can't it being sorted by August.
